3 Ways Technology Is Changing the Logistics Industry

Technology is advancing and changing every aspect of our world. Some of these changes are helpful to various industries, including logistics. Others will significantly change how we work, which many people find overwhelming. With time and training, we can accommodate all the ways technology is changing the logistics industry and use it to help customers. We’ll explain three changes below.

Lightweight Truck Materials

Fuel costs are rising, which can make shipping more expensive. Luckily, updating truck parts from cast iron and steel to lightweight fiberglass, aluminum alloys, and other materials can help shippers save money. While this update has upfront costs, the long-term savings are worth it. Renovating trucks with lightweight materials can reduce their weight by 50 percent, which makes them more fuel efficient and affordable.

Better Shipment Tracking

Technology hasn’t just improved trucks but also communication. Cloud technology makes it easier for drivers to stay connected with managers and customers so shipment tracking stays accurate. Improved GPS systems also make it easier for drivers to navigate accidents and construction on the road that could delay shipments.

Autonomous Trucks and Drones in the Future

While lightweight vehicles and better shipment tracking improve the shipping experience for drivers and customers, autonomous delivery trucks and drones could reduce the need for drivers altogether. Many workers within the logistics industry might not like this technology, but it has not yet advanced enough to become a reality. Car and drone manufacturers are still developing autonomous prototypes that will need lots of work before anyone in logistics can use them. Even if autonomous delivery vehicles are possible one day in the future, we will still need humans to manage deliveries.

Two of these ways technology changes the logistics industry are already here, and we are grateful for the helpful advancements. Whatever happens with autonomous delivery options, we continue to look forward to how technology can help us improve. At One Call Logistics, our vehicle hauling services are efficient, timely, and human-powered so you can get the help you need when you need it.
