4 Things You’ll Need To Consider Before Buying a Boat

Purchasing a boat is a considerable expense but also a thrilling one. Maybe you’ve wanted a boat for quite some time. Or, perhaps you’ve recently moved into a home with a lake in your backyard. These are four things you’ll need to consider before buying a boat.

Your Budget

There’s more to owning a boat than the monthly payments. You’ll also need to factor in things like fuel, insurance, winter storage, maintenance, docking and marina fees, accessories, and gear. Understanding what you can afford will ensure years of fun ahead.

New or Used

Like many other items, new boats come with warranties. There’s nothing more frustrating than purchasing something new only to have it break within a short period. The new boat warranty gives you peace of mind, especially if you’re new to owning a boat. You can rest assured knowing that it will cost you nothing or very little if anything goes wrong.

A used boat may also come with a warranty, but that’s not guaranteed. It will promise enjoyment with friends and family at a reduced price, though.

The Size

Multiple factors go into determining what boat size will be best for you. Here are questions to ask yourself:

  • Do you plan on using the boat overnight?
  • How many passengers would you like the ship to hold?
  • Are you planning on pulling skiers or tubers?
  • Do you want to store and transport the boat on a trailer or park it at the marina?
  • What body of water will you primarily operate the boat on?

Take some time to answer these questions before you head out to purchase your boat.

Your Storage Options

Another thing you’ll need to consider before buying a boat is your form of storage. The climate you reside in and the type of boat you purchase will determine the type of storage it will need. The following are a few of your options. If you live in a warm climate, you may be able to keep the boat docked in the water all year round. If you live in an area where boating is popular, you may find facilities that stack boats on outside racks. You also may have to use dry indoor boat storage. You may need to hire a boat moving service to move your boat from the marina to storage in that case.
