How To Stay Safe Around Oversized Loads on the Interstate

Tony Mers • March 23, 2022

It can be extremely intimidating when you see an oversized load driving down the road. You may become impatient to pass these large loads, or annoyed about how much room they take up. Either way, you still need to drive safely. Let’s discover how to stay safe around oversized loads on the interstate.

What Can You Do

Typically, oversized loads driving on the interstate will drive well below the speed limit and stay in the right-hand lane. Road conditions and traffic won’t always allow for this. As a driver, you need to be courteous, cautious, and considerate when sharing the road with them.

Be Cautious

Being smug while driving can cause real dangers. Always use extra caution when sharing the road with other vehicles, especially when it comes to oversized loads. You may be tempted to drive close to them during crowded times, but remember to keep your distance, as it takes oversized loads a lot longer to stop than a regular vehicle.

Be Courteous

Always maintain a safe distance from the back of an oversized load. Remember that stopping distances are further than a regular car or truck. Ensure you act accordingly to knowing this knowledge. If you have to pass an oversized load, do so legally and safely and allow the truck driver plenty of space.

Be Considerate

Allow plenty of room to oversized loads on the interstate. There are “no zones” on oversized loads where your vehicle is no longer seen on their mirrors. It’s your job to be considerate and give them space and time while you’re driving.

Laws That Keep Your Safe

Each state’s Department of Transportation and Federal Highway Administration are tasked with enforcing and governing transport cargo safety. These departments help ensure public safety while driving. These rules and regulations include:

  • Curfews when using the interstate
  • Weight compliance checks
  • Pre-trip inspections
  • Legal weight limits
  • Ensuring cargo is secured safely
  • Rechecking secured cargo every 150 miles

As wildfires become more frequent and intense across the U.S., the demand for fast, reliable emergency response grows more urgent by the year. Behind every successful wildfire containment effort is a powerful network of moving parts—from fire crews and equipment to mobile command centers, light towers, water tankers, and power units. None of it reaches the front lines without logistics . But not all logistics providers are built for crisis response. When lives, property, and natural resources are on the line, having the right logistics partner can be the difference between delay and action, between chaos and coordination.
