Tips for Safe Cross-Country Travel in the Summer

Summer is fast approaching, and for many, this time of the year means lots of travel. The beaches are open, the sun is shining, and the kids are out of school. This blog will discuss tips for safe cross-country travel in the summer, no matter where you’re off to this season

Service Your Vehicle Before Heading Out

This summer, don’t head out on a cross-country journey without first servicing your vehicle. It’s essential to ensure you resolve all minor car issues. Head to your favorite mechanic to get a fresh oil change, check that all fluids are at the desired level, your battery is in good working condition, all your lightbulbs are working, and inflate your tires to the manufacturer’s standards. Don’t forget to fill up your gas tank before you take off.

Create an Emergency Kit for the Car

Whether or not you’re going on a road trip, it’s a brilliant idea always to keep an emergency kit in the car. This kit should include:

  • A flashlight
  • Batteries
  • Water bottles
  • Blankets
  • A first aid kit
  • Jumper cables
  • Flares
  • Cell phone charger

You can add in some non-perishable food items such as granola bars and trail mix. Make sure you know of and have easy access to roadside assistance programs.

Pack the Sunscreen

Sunscreen is an essential item to have on hand during the warm summer months. It’s never a bad idea to keep extra in the vehicle. You may forget to pack it during the excitement of vacation or not pack enough. You should also wear sunglasses to protect your eyes from harmful UV rays.

Take Frequent Breaks

Another tip for safe cross-country travel in the summer is to take frequent breaks. Give everyone along for the ride time to get out and stretch, walk around, and visit the restroom. Stop when you need to for snacks, meals, and hydration to again allow yourself and others a break from sitting. Use these breaks as an opportunity to switch drivers.

Pack Prescriptions and Other Medications

If you or anyone else on the road take prescriptions, pack enough for the entirety of the trip, plus more. You should also bring over-the-counter medications for allergies, headaches, and minor aches and pains.

Cross-country trips are fun and exciting! They’re one of the great joys of summer vacations for many families. Get out and make cherished memories this summer.
