Considerations and Regulations for Moving Your Boat by Road

Moving is more than transporting your belongings from one home to another. A boat has to be transported as well, and this process requires some planning. These are a few considerations and regulations for moving your boat by road.

Measure Your Boat for Transport

Boat moving services typically transport more than one boat at a time. Before receiving a quote to transport your boat, you must know the dimensions. The boat transporter needs to know the entire length of your vessel to understand what other ships will fit on the trailer.

When you’re measuring, you must include:

  • Swim platforms
  • Outboard motors
  • Bow pulpits
  • Outboard motor brackets

If it’s on a trailer, include from the tip of the tongue to the end of the motor. The maximum height for most overpasses is 13 feet six inches. If your boat is taller than this, you’ll need a height pole escort. Remove all antennas, radars, and other items that could get tipped during transport. If the width of your boat is more than eight feet six inches, you’ll need a permit to transport it.

Prepare Your Boat

Begin preparing your boat by taking photos of it in the water, removing all your personal belongings and anything flammable. Once you’ve removed the boat from the water, thoroughly clean it. Once it’s clean, take photos of your boat out of the water.

Remove all cables from batteries, fuel from the gas tank, and liquids from the holding tanks. You may want to shrink wrap your boat to avoid damage and keep it clean during the move.
